The annual exhibition of Central Saint Martins graduates in the Lethaby Gallery celebrates the power of design to cross borders, be they geographic, social or disciplinary. In a contemporary world increasingly defined by boundary or binary, here are the designers who challenge isolationism with ingenuity and urgency. Creativity knows no boundaries.
The visual language for the exhbition signage suggest a border-crossing and the visitor is greeted by the word ‘Welcome’ translated into fifty languages. The typeface – called Utopia– was originally comissioned as part of the Creative Unions identity and was extended into a number of non-latin alphabets exclusively for this exhibtion. The colour palette is bright and optimistic palette and all the suignage is manufactured using the same reflective material normally used in road signs.
Creative Unions is an initiative of Central Saint Martins and the other Colleges of University of the Arts London bringing together events, actions, and voices to demonstrate that creativity must operate across borders – geographical, social and disciplinary.
